VE Day Celebrations Friday 8th May
When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Despite our present situation, the 75th anniversary will provide an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through this dark and terrifying period.
As you may be aware, the planned street party and festivities on Glebe Field and Gypsy Lane were cancelled last month due to the C-19 outbreak.
Since then, much thought has been given as to how we might best find a way to unite on the day, raise a glass and get as close as we can to our neighbours.
With this in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to encourage residents to hold their own front-of-house garden party (ensuring social distancing rules are fully observed) during the afternoon of the 8th May.
In preparation for the party it would be great to continue building on the Bleasby in Bloom & Scarecrow displays, being as patriotic as you possibly can.
Bunting will appear around Glebe Field and the five flags will be raised at the air-crews memorial, in addition to the war memorial in St Mary’s churchyard being appropriately decorated. People may wish to pay their respects by visiting the memorials, but please, as always, respect the social distancing guidelines.
Children are welcome to make hanging-decorations (rainbows, pinecones etc) to hang on the fence along Glebe Field next to the church or at Hazelford – red, white and blue or rainbow colours would be great.
At 3pm, let’s raise a glass together along with a communal three cheers; as loud as possible!
Then at 7pm there will be a ringing of the church bells and we are hoping for an “all clear” siren to sound shortly before. Please join in with ringing your own bells.
The Queens pre-recorded address will be broadcast on the BBC at 21:00 - the exact moment her father, King George VI, gave a radio address 75 years ago. Other national plans include a public sing along of Dame Vera Lynn's We'll Meet Again, a song synonymous with World War Two.
These arrangements are, of course, contingent upon the relevant C-19 restrictions in force on the day.
Please keep an eye on the Village Facebook and Community Website for further information and for contacts if you have any questions.
